Tiny Sheep, Big Impact at McCaffrey’s Estate If you’ve visited McCaffrey’s Estate recently, you’ve probably spotted three of our most...

At McCaffrey’s Estate, we feel incredibly lucky to call the Hunter Valley home. Our vineyard and cottages are surrounded by rich soils, and vines that have been nurtured for over thirty years. With such a special place to live and share with our guests, we believe it’s our responsibility to tread as lightly as possible and look after the land for the future.
That’s why sustainability is woven into everything we do, from our vineyard, to our guest accommodation.
All of our water comes from rainwater tanks, ensuring we make the most of natural rainfall. Our estate is also powered in part by solar panels, capturing the Hunter Valley sunshine to keep the lights on, the cottages comfortable, and the wine flowing.
For guests travelling with electric vehicles, we’ve installed EV chargers at both our cottages and cellar door. It’s just one of the small ways we make eco-friendly travel a little easier.
When you stay with us, you’ll find locally sourced, handmade soaps in the bathrooms, alongside refillable dispensers that help reduce single-use plastics. We provide recycling and compost bins to help minimise waste, and we love seeing our guests join us in caring for the planet.
We have a worm farm and compost bins which helps to provide natural composts for our vegetable garden which is also planted with bee-friendly flowers, helping support vital pollinators that keep our ecosystem thriving.
Caring for the land also extends to how we look after our vines. At McCaffrey’s Estate we practise sustainable viticulture, which means working with the environment rather than against it. From minimising chemical use to encouraging biodiversity between the vines, we’re committed to producing beautiful Hunter Valley wines in a way that protects the soil, and the vines for generations to come. We also have babydoll sheep who graze and fertilise the land, reducing some of the mowing and adding a huge amount of cuteness too.
We work to support the broader Hunter Valley community by sourcing locally wherever we can, whether that’s produce like our cheese & olives in the cellar door or the artwork, candles and merchandise we retail. Keeping things close to home reduces transport impacts and strengthens our region. Our wine bottles from the cellar door are all reused at the local smash room before then being recycled.
Sustainability is a journey, and we know there’s always more to do. We’re exploring further ways to reduce single-use plastics, enhance biodiversity around the vineyard, and continue to share our passion for eco-friendly living with guests.
For us, caring for the land isn’t just good practice, it’s part of who we are. When you visit McCaffrey’s Estate, you’re not only enjoying boutique accommodation and estate-grown wines, you’re helping support a small, family-run winery that puts sustainability at the heart of everything we do.
Discover the beauty of the Hunter Valley while treading lightly on the land. Book your stay at McCaffrey’s Estate and be part of our sustainable journey.
