Planning your getaway in the Hunter Valley
There’s so much to discover in the Hunter Valley – from world-class wines and mouth-watering food to adventures the whole family can enjoy. Let us help you plan your next getaway to our beautiful corner of the world.
When you stay at McCaffrey’s Estate, some of the finest boutique cellar doors are right on your doorstep. If you’re searching for unique wines you won’t find in your local bottle shop, you’re in the right place. Many of our neighbours are, like us, family-owned and operated, offering a more personal wine tasting experience, complete with stories of life amongst the vines.
We’ve gathered some of the best ways to enjoy your time in the Hunter Valley and hope this inspires your next adventure with us.

A Winemaker for the Day at McCaffrey’s Estate
Led by a knowledgeable wine educator, participants will be guided through the process of crafting their own unique bottle of red wine during a hands-on blending experience. The wine educators will assist in selecting and blending different varietals to create a wine that perfectly suits individual tastes. Participants will experiment with various blending ratios to find the ideal combination, all while learning about the characteristics of different grapes and how they influence the final product. After finalising their blend, each participant will bottle their creation and take home a one-of-a-kind souvenir. Click here for more information.
Bicycle Riding
For those who enjoy exploring at a slower pace, cycling along Hermitage Road is one of the best ways to take in the beauty of the Hunter Valley. With a dedicated bicycle lane running the full length of the road, it’s safe, scenic and perfect for discovering boutique wineries at your own rhythm.
Hiring an electric bicycle from Sutton Estate makes the adventure even more enjoyable. The gentle electric assist means riders of all ages and fitness levels can comfortably cover more ground, leaving you free to simply soak up the views and stop in at cellar doors along the way.
The best part? Any wine you purchase on your journey will be delivered straight back to your accommodation, so there’s no need to carry bottles with you. All you need to think about is which winery to visit next, and how much fun you’re having on two wheels.
Helicopter
If you’re looking for a bird’s eye view of the Hunter Valley, a helicopter flight with Hunter Valley Helicopters is an unforgettable way to see the region. From above, the patchwork of vineyards, rolling hills and winding country roads are even more breathtaking.
You can choose from a quick scenic flight to get a taste of the view, or make a day of it with a wine tour that lands you at cellar doors for tastings along the way. For something extra special, consider a package that includes lunch at one of the Hunter Valley’s acclaimed restaurants — the perfect blend of adventure and indulgence.
Whether it’s a romantic experience for two or a memorable family outing, a helicopter flight offers a unique perspective on the Valley that’s guaranteed to impress.

Hot Air Balloon
Another truly magical way to experience the Hunter Valley is from the sky in a hot air balloon flight with Beyond Ballooning. At first light, you’ll gently lift off in the basket and float above the vineyards as the sun rises, casting a golden glow over the valley. From this peaceful vantage point, the patchwork of vines, farmland and distant mountains stretches out as far as the eye can see – a perspective you’ll never forget.
The experience doesn’t end when you touch back down. To celebrate your flight, you’ll be treated to a delicious champagne breakfast, the perfect way to round off a morning of adventure and serenity.
Whether it’s a romantic escape, a bucket-list experience, or simply a new way to appreciate the Hunter, a hot air balloon ride is guaranteed to be one of the highlights of your visit.
Horse Riding
If you’re looking to make the most of the fresh air and wide-open spaces, Hunter Valley Horses offers a wonderful way to connect with the outdoors. It’s a peaceful and scenic experience, perfect for soaking in the natural beauty of the Valley. With packages designed for everyone from first-time riders to the more experienced, it’s an adventure the whole family can enjoy.
For something a little different, the same venue also offers Segway Tours. Glide along an old 1880s stock route, keep an eye out for kangaroos, and take in the spectacular scenery in a fun, relaxed way. It’s a unique way to explore the Hunter, combining a touch of history with a dash of adventure.
Golf
For golf enthusiasts, the Hunter Valley offers several fantastic courses to choose from.
